Canvas & Studio Video Quizzing w/ Gradebook Integration

Creating an active learning environment for students in an Online and/or Hyrbrid course can be a challenge. I always try to model the same behavior in my F2F class as I do in my Online course. If I provide a 6-minute learning burst for my students in my F2F, I want to try to do the same thing in my Online course. The experience and relationship building shouldn't be any different in an Online course..easier said than done, right? Heartland does have various tools to help you with bridging the gaps you may be finding when trying to mirror your F2F to your Online course.

One of my Heartland Favorite Tools (I'm thinking of doing a top-10 list soon) is the Studio feature. Are you familiar with that? The tool can be found on the left-hand side in Canvas (picture on the right). Studio allows you to create a video recording of yourself, a screen capture of your computer screen, or you can also create a screencast with your webcam (picture-in-picture). There is always that fear of being on the camera, but you wouldn't cover up your face in a F2F - that would be silly! Try to embrace it,  you're students will appreciate you greatly for it. In addition, Studio also allows you to upload videos that you already recorded AND/OR you can also provide YouTube links! How cool is that?!

So, why would you want to do that? Several reasons. Studio has several features including the ability to create captions. All videos should have captions regardless if your student has a known disability - many learners may actually prefer to read the captions (at the library, no headphones, etc.). When my kids get into trouble for not doing their nightly readings, I just turn on captions and force them to read! All kidding aside, captions are easy and from the dozens of video platforms I have used, Studio actually has a very high accuracy rate.

Studio also allows Quizzing (very much like EdPuzzle). The Quiz questions are placed on top of the video and the video will pause allowing an opportunity for the student to reflect on the content of the video.

In addition, once you place a video in Studio, you can embed in any of your Canvas Courses by using the V - External Tools option

I have also documented a written tutorial to help you get started, you can download that and follow it step-by-step to help you get started. I'm anxious to see your videos, soon! OH - and keep in mind STUDENTS have Studio too. What a great opportunity to submit an assignment...via video!

Please contact me if you have questions or need help using this favorite tool or any other instructional technology!
