Fall 2022 Welcome!

Faculty,

As you are preparing to come back for the Fall semester, I wanted to take a few minutes and share some important reminders. First, I want to introduce you to Tim Salm and Pete Pucek, who have joined my team as Instructional Technologists and Designers. I’m thrilled to have them in the TLC and looking forward to you meeting with them. You can learn more about their experiences in our recent blog post. Look for Tim and Pete in your areas as they will be embedded across the divisions. Welcome! In addition, Jewel Crowley-Custis has had her baby… Everette, a baby girl, and we are thrilled for her and her new family. She will not be returning back until October.

Teaching and Learning Commons

The Teaching and Learning Commons has many innovative technology solutions and we hope that you encourage students to take advantage of the space by assigning a final project that utilizes any of the learning equipment. We are happy to arrange a class tour if you like. New this summer, we have created free and open courses that you can share with students prior to them working on a project. Currently, we have a course on Podcasting, 3D Printing, and Nursing Virtual Reality – all of which can be shared with anyone. Once completed, learners will earn a digital badge through our Credly platform. NEW to our area is a large format printer where we can now print student posters, instructional aids, and banners! Come see us to learn more!

Certificates & the ADC

After a very successful run with the Alternative Design and Delivery Certification course, I have decided to change the process after a lengthy study. The ADC will no longer be offered in one 16-week or 8-week course, rather, the certification will now be provided through micro-credentials. Here is the lineup for Fall:

  • Canvas Training (you can start this training anytime, it is open and ready for you to take) – we will receive a notification when you have completed it. This will replace the supplemental certification that we once had. We recommend everyone participate in this at your own leisure.
  • Instructional Design Certificate (.5 ECH) Dates | September 6th  – September 27th
    Facilitated by Manju Kishore

  • Universal Design for Learning Certificate (.5 ECH) Dates | September 26th – October 13th
    Facilitated by Zach Petrea

  • Assessment (.5 ECH) Dates | October 17th – November 7th
    Facilitated by Dr. Wayne Bass

  • Accessibility (.5 ECH) Dates | Ongoing, Open Canvas Course, complete at your own pace.
Course sponsored by ILCCO. Link to course
  • Capstone Course (1 ECH) Dates | November 1st – December 9th
Facilitated by Dr. Anna J. Catterson

As you can see, the micro-credentials are short in length and do not all have to be taken at one time. The capstone must be taken to become certified to teach Online/Hybrid. The Capstone course is by arrangement and not a Canvas course. To enroll in these certificates, first get permission from your Dean, and then send an email to me with the certificate you would like to enroll in. We hope that this flexibility will create more opportunities and offer a UDL approach.

Course Reset
If you would like to have your course reset for Fall 2022 (completely deleted; remove the template), please email one of us in the TLC and we are happy to do that for you before you copy your course. We can also help you copy your course for those concerned about their Course Outcomes – just reach out BEFORE you begin making copies so we can help.

Essential Competencies
Remember! You should have Essential Competencies in your course and you should be linking them to an assignment. We can help! Let us know if you need help and we can demonstrate it for you. Set your Outcomes up BEFORE the class begins and assess the students when the learning happens, not at the end of the semester.

Professional Development
We have a wide range of professional development offerings this Fall – more than we ever have, before! Time, Pete, Jewel, and I will be facilitating professional development that we hope is specifically related to your area. I’m attaching the Fall 2022 PD Schedule for your review. And new this year, you will earn a digital badge for attending at least 5 of our professional development workshops! Woo!

Grading Schemes
Remember, check the grading schemes in your course to make sure that they are set and are an accurate reflection of your syllabus. More on that, here, provided in this tutorial.

Cross-Sections
If you plan to cross-section your Fall 2022 course, please email me as soon as possible. There is a very specific time that this has to be done and I’ll need to know early to make preparations.
